Unless one is accustomed to traveling in Gulfstream G-500s, being provided with complimentary luxury autos, the best hotel suites and being surrounded by an entourage that includes a swing coach, sports psychologist, personal trainer, nanny and nutritionist… not to mention boxes of free golf balls and gloves every week… the well-coddled life of a golf professional is a far cry from that of most members of Hacker Nation.
Still, one corner of Florida offers at least a fleeting glimpse of the life of luxury for the road-weary golfer. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area boasts a collection of upscale golf resorts that not only serve to pamper and spoil travelers with white-glove service, fine dining and luxurious amenities, but also offer some of the best golf in the state.
Start with the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor. No less an authority than Ernie Els, the globe-trotting South African star, called Innisbrook's famous Copperhead Course "the best course we (the PGA Tour) play in Florida." Considering some of the alternatives – Doral's Blue Monster, Arnie's own Bay Hill and Pete Dye's bit of architorture at the Stadium Course of the TPC at Sawgrass – Els' opinion, backed by similar comments from the other Tour players, is high praise indeed
SANFORD, N.C. – It’s that time of year, when every golfer in the frozen north is picking my brain for travel tips for warm weather golf. One of the big questions is where to play in the Pinehurst area. After all, Golftown, USA is almost as packed as Myrtle Beach when it comes to golf courses.
Nevertheless, just as Bandon Dunes knocked Pebble Beach off its lofty perch as America’s greatest seaside golf venue, so too has mighty Pinehurst resort seen a serious challenge to it’s decades long rule over golf in the North Carolina sandhills region. Tobacco Road, designed by the late, great Mike Strantz, has become a must play, if not the first play when traveling to North Carolina for a golf vacation.
The difficulty of the course is derived directly from the fact that – unless you’ve been to Ireland or Scotland – you’ve never seen anything like it. Nobody is better than Strantz at optical illusion and nowhere do his optical illusions invoke more trepidation, confusion or frustration in a player than at Tobacco Road. Holes look cloak-and-dagger claustrophobic from the tee. Since some tee shots are blind, players (particularly first-time visitors), are uncertain exactly where to place their shot. (Always remember – when teeing off on a Strantz hole, go over the mound in front of you, Strantz’ fairways are behind the mound…).
Set next to a stunning white-sand beach in the midst of Fuerteventura Golf Resort, Sheraton Fuerteventura is one of the finest luxury hotels in the Canary Islands. The resort is located just 8kms from the airport and surrounded by two 18-hole golf courses. It also boasts a Thalasso spa, which uses many of the island's natural resources in its treatments, several restaurants, boutiques, a multiplex and meeting and conference facilities for business guests.
There are 266 luxurious guestrooms including 51 suites which all come fully equipped with internet access and air-conditioning. The resort and island attracts many visitors each year - people who are looking for a relaxed holiday with a wealth of amenities to keep them occupied.
